“In our family, there is a thin line between trout fishing and religion,” wrote Norman Maclean in A River Runs Through It. Similarly, artist Geoff Austrian fills his spiritual well mainly from the trout streams, mountains and plains of the American West, subjects that inspire his landscapes. “In a good day of painting or fishing,” he says, “all my cares and even my sense of time disappear. I feel completely at one with nature.” Geoff tries to capture a particular magical moment, such as the light on a rushing stream, and make it timeless. “I try to reach for the ideal and universal beyond the chaos of modern life.”
Geoff has studied with Jill Pottle, Ruth Kates, Maris Platais, Susan Kelley and Ed Stitt. Geoff’s awards include Best in Show and the Paul Peters Memorial Award for Excellence in Painting from the Lexington Arts and Crafts Society and second prize in the Newton Art Association’s 2010 Library Show. He has had shows at the Congregational Church of Weston, UCC and United Parish of Auburndale.
