Ariel Finelt Shoemaker/AFS Mosaics

My work — spanning MetaPaintings and mixed media mosaics — is built on a single organizing principle: the patient, repeated mark. In my MetaPaintings, spiraling circles and layered rectangles accumulate across the canvas, creating compositions that are simultaneously dense and fluid, punctuated by gold leaf that catches light the way a rest catches silence in music. My mixed media mosaics translate this same sensibility into three dimensions — tessera by tessera, fragment by fragment — where disparate materials surrender their separateness to become something unified and alive. Across all of it, the process is inherently meditative, demanding a slowing down both in the making and the seeing. For me, the making is the meaning.
