“There is a reciprocity between nature and me. I find myself humanizing it by infusing it with my thoughts, fears, and passions. Nature, for its part, finds a path to my primordial memory. It provided threads for my work for many years.” Lois Tarlow (1928-2021) was a well-known, highly influential Boston based Artist, Teacher, Arts Writer, and a strong feminist force in the Boston art world for seven decades. She is best known for her mixed-media works that often explored themes of nature, time, and memory. Her work led her to many exotic locations such as Thailand, Viet Nam, Maine, and Taos, New Mexico where she worked on site and gave student workshops. Tarlow’s abstract work often incorporated materials such as paper, fabric, and found objects to create rich, layered, compositions. Born in Brockton, MA, Tarlow studied at the Boston Museum School under world-renowned Artists such as Hyman Bloom and Oskar Kokoshka. She exhibits widely in numerous galleries and museums, including the DeCordova and Danforth Museums, and is in the permanent collection at the Boston MFA.
