Myra Abelson

Painting for me has always been about expressing what I find beautiful. I take great pleasure in interpreting the lushness of a landscape or the delicate petals of a flower. Sometimes I want to create shapes and textures and color in an abstract way and other times it is about the light and how it reflects off a surface or across a field. The actual process of brushing paint on a canvas is such a sensuous and emotional experience and the magic often happens outside of my awareness, when I step back from the easel and find something exciting has been created.

I feel grateful to be able to paint, and the time I spend in my studio is precious to me allowing me to create work that is both comforting and soothing, something I find especially important during challenging times. It is now my pleasure to share my work with you.

I received a 3 year art scholarship to the School of the MFA while in high school and later studied art at Brandeis University and the DeCordova Museum School. I have been influenced by the Impressionists with their focus on color and light and a reverence for the ordinary. Today I find myself drawn to a more minimalist approach preferring a spare palette and capturing the essence of things.
